STRIPED MARLIN AND ROOSTERS DAZZLE PISCES ANGLERS

Pisces Fleet Weekly update from February 21 – 27, 2025

Unsurprisingly, the weather and the fishing at the tip of the Baja peninsula continue attracting anglers. This week, the temperature ranged from 65 to 75 degrees, with the water lagging about 10 degrees behind.  Many visitors had left frigid weather at home, some even colder and wetter. This past week, the diverse range of fish, from Bonito to Sierra, provided anglers who visited Cabo with unpredictable battles and unforgettable moments.

Panga Anamar, a 23-foot panga run by Captain Cesar Ruiz who took two passengers out from Gary, Indiana, John Vinzant and Morris Eddy They caught and released Five Roosterfish weighing up to 15 pounds with mackerel. There is always something special about catching the Roosterfish, the thrilling Sea of Cortez fighters.

"C ROD," a 38-foot Blackfin

The Kirkpatricks, Allison, Charles, Jackson, Mason, Nick, and Tyson, on the “C ROD,” a 38-foot Blackfin, were fishing with Captain Daniel and Mates when they headed to the Los Arcos. There, they caught one 6-pound Sierra and one 4-pound Skipjack on cuchi. Continuing to the Migriano, they managed to catch four 9- to 10-pound Roosterfish on mackerel and One Bonito on a cuchi. It had been a fun fishing day, and they were ready to go again! They caught Ten Sierra and  Twenty-Seven Bonito all on cuchi. Almost all day long, one after another, fish took the bait until there were none left. There were a few happy Texans that day!


Amber Willet, Lucas McCauley, Matt McCauley, Ryan Willet, and Sofia Willet from Muskegon, Michigan, chose the “VALERIE,” a 35-foot Bertram, Captain Roberto Sandez, and Mate Salvador Flores. The captain and mate headed straight to the Migriano, where their group caught Nineteen Sierra and Fifteen Bonito, then continued to the Gaspareno, where they caught One Sheepshead, all on bait.

Captain Pepe and Mates Dulce, Ulices, and Ramon took their charter of TEN anglers on the “CHASIN TAIL,” a 62-foot Viking who caught One 12-pound Roosterfish on mackerel at the Old Lighthouse, One Triggerfish, and One Yellowtail on a lure at the Pedregal. Abel Hernandez, Angie Sandoval, Carmen Hernandez, Charyl Hayes, Chris Quinn, Daralei Quinn,  Jose Sandoval, Kris Herd, Kristine Herd, and  Tony Hayes were laughing as they left the Chasin Tail. One of them commented, “There is a saying that it’s not the size of the fish you catch, but rather the size of those that got away, and we had some BIG fish that got away!”

“BBII,” a 37-foot Viking Billfish 2018, run by Captain Osiel Winkler and his Mate, was kept busy with his charter from Denver, Colorado. First, he took them to the Front of the Hill, where Katie Pribyl, Mike Curtis, Penny Callantine, Skye Callantine, and Sue Curtis caught and released One 120-pound Striped Marlin on mackerel in front of Frente Cerro, and they moved on to Gaspareno where they caught Thirty Sierra and Eleven Bonito on bait. The weather was paradise compared to the constant rain and cold for most Midwest and Canadian visitors thrilled to arrive in Mexico.

Jeremy Aschenbach and Wendy Brittain from Vail, Colorado, with excellent Captain Jesus Romero and Mate Jesus Winkler on the “LA BRISA,” a 31-foot Bertram, took off to the Migriano as soon as they boarded the boat where they caught Four Sierra and One Bonito on bait. They continued to the Los Arcos Bank, where they caught Four 20-pound Roosterfish and One 12-pound Jack Crevalle on mackerel. While it wasn’t a wide-open day, there were enough fish to keep them happy. They were pleased with the diversity of fish they caught.

Alexsandra Valadez, Blanca Urias, Efrain Uriarte, and Jose Uriarte from Sinaloa, Mexico, chose the “TIBURON,” a 31-foot Bertram with Captain Fernando and Mate Marcelo”C ROD,” a 38-foot Blackfin at the Santa Maria Spot. It was a fantastic day for their Sinaloa clients.

Luc Morency and Nancy La Flamme from Montréal, Alberta, Canada, selected the “ANDREA,” a 28-foot Uniflite with Captain Fernando Noyola and Mate Marcelo D. as their fishing platform. They headed to the Whale’s Head, where they caught and released One 100-pound Striped Marlin plus Two 6 or 7-pound Skipjacks on mackerel. What a perfect day it turned out to be!

The “RUTHLESS,” a 31-foot Bertram, run by Captain Beto Lira and Mate Jesus R., had two couples from Titusville, Florida, Bob Ellis, Susan Ellis, Wendy Cahill, and William Cahill, fishing with them at the San Cristobal Spot, where they caught One 12-pound Roosterfish on a mackerel, and One Sierra and Sixteen Bonito on bait at the Gaspareno Spot.

On a HALF-DAY TRIP, Captain Ricardo Escamilla and Mate Yahoo Jose Escamilla Yahoo took Douglas and Heather J. Brown and Jeffrey A. and Latisha D. Arrington, from Columbus, Georgia, out on the “YAHOO,” a 42-foot Bertram, three to four miles from the Hill where they caught One 100-pound Striped Marlin on a mackerel. What a surprise it was for the two couples when they returned to the dock with a flag flying after only a few hours.

John Deltier, Michael Dube, and Rob Wilson from Argyle, Texas, chose the “C ROD,” a 38-ft Blackfin, with Captain Daniel and Mates, and they had a very successful day catching a diversity of fish.  They caught Five Sierra and Ten Bonito on cuchi at the Gaspareno and One 15-pound Roosterfish on a mackerel at the Los Arcos. Catching such a diversity of fish gave the anglers unpredictable battles and unforgettable moments.

"VALERIE," a 35-foot Bertram

Katy Ketterar, Linda Guarino, Tony Guarino, and William Ketterar from Deep River, Connecticut, chartered the “VALERIE,” a 35-foot Bertram, with Captain Orlando M. and Mate Salvador Flores to run the show, and they were pleased they did.  Not only did they catch a variety of fish, but they also enjoyed fishing with Captain Orlando and Mate Salvador. They stayed busy all day at the Migriano, catching Fifteen Sierra and Twelve Bonito on cuchi, Five Grouper up to 15 pounds, and a Sheepshead up to 15 pounds on chum.  What a pleasant day they had.

Then, on the “HOT ROD,” a 42-foot Cabo Flybridge, Captain Erick Orozco and Mate Hot Rod Jose Ramiro Ramirez took Glenn O’Rourke and Inderjit Singh from West Linn, Oregon, to the Santa Maria Bank, where they caught and released One 60-pound Mako Shark they caught on curry.  It was an exciting battle!
