The weather and the water temperatures dropped this week, but the variety of species available for fishing remained diverse and exciting. The water was around 67 to 68 degrees, and the air hovered around 68 to 75. Although it was cooler and windier than in previous weeks, which are key factors in successful fishing trips, most anglers didn’t leave empty-handed. Schools of Sierra were around and hungry, as were Bonito, Yellowfin Tuna, Jack Crevalle, Roosterfish, a few sizeable Wahoo, and some Striped Marlin. Despite the cooler temperatures and increased wind, the diversity and abundance of fish ensured the week was memorable for all who ventured out on the water.

Richard Kernion, Jr. opted to fish on the “RIPPER,” a 35-foot Cabo Flybridge, with Captain Abel and Mate Ninja running the boat, and he hit the jackpot! He caught and released One 120-pound Striped Marlin on a mackerel and ONE 53-pound WAHOO on a purple lure. Both fish were caught at the Herradura! Nice going to the angler, the captain, and the mate.

The “ADRIANA” is a 28-foot Uniflite run by Captain Frank and Mate Mario. When Amelia Headley, Bryant Headley, III, Bryant Headley, Jr., and Caitlin Headley came to Cabo, they selected the “ADRIANA” for their fishing trip. A standard cruiser has the best layout of a boat of this size, with hard-top shade and plenty of outside seating, including TWO fighting chairs, a cabin, a bathroom, and places to lie down inside and outside the cabin. There is also a live bait well, ship-to-shore radio, and Tuna Tubes for use during tournaments; all boats have GPS. Equipped with Cal-star rods, matching Penn International reels, Shimano TLD 25 for casting, and a full selection of trolling lures. Line varies, depending on the time of year, from 30 to 80-pound test. They caught Four Sierra on cuchi at the Pozo Cota. They were comfortable on the boat, had a great time with their Captain and Mate, and enjoyed getting to know them. It was a memorable experience.

On the BILL COLLECTOR II, a 35-foot Cabo Flybridge, Captain JC Martinez and Mate Silverio had their group from Stuart, Florida, Jay Cocorullo, Louis Cocorullo, Rex Cocorullo, Richard Yannaco, Richmond Harmen, and Xan Cocorullo, used a dead mackerel 3 miles from the Del Cerro to catch and release One 100-pound Striped Marlin. They continued to travel and stopped in front of San Jose, caught One 12-pound Dorado and Three Skipjack on feathers.

Looking for a good boat with an excellent Captain and crew, Clint Pitzer and Josh Travis, from Edmond, Oklahoma, decided Captain Ricardo Escamilla and Mate Yahoo Jose Escamilla Yahoo, on the “YAHOO,” a 42-foot Bertram, which were rated as some of the best. Captain Ricardo and Mate Jose are friendly, easy-going, knowledgeable of the area, and keep the boat pristine. They have years of experience together. As they headed north into the Sea of Cortez, the Oklahoma anglers caught and released Two 100-pound Striped Marlin on mackerel at Chileno and Three 15-pound Roosterfish and Two 12-pound Jack Crevalle on mackerel at Los Arcos. Captain Ricardo and Mate Jose were dedicated to making their day a success.

Captain Raymon and Mate Kiury running the “LISTO,” a 48-foot Viking took the Linwood, Kansas couple, Jill and Mitch Rademacher, to the 1150 Spot where they caught One 25-pound Wahoo on curry. They had been informed that fishing was slow, so they were excited to get one of the prime targeted species and left the boat smiling!

David Blackburn, Jeff Blackburn, and Mike Omalley from Moline, Illinois, chose the “LA BRISA,” a 31-foot Bertram with the excellent Captain Ray Winkler and Mate Jesus Winkler in charge of the boat. They had heard that the fishing was slow. However, they immediately liked the captain and mate and knew they were in for a great day, whether or not they caught many fish; under the circumstances, fishing was outstanding. They headed to the Spot known as Elias Calles, where they caught Two Sierra on cuchy, Thirty Bonito on both cuchy and Rapalas, One 15-pound Roosterfish, and One 35-pound Yellowtail, both on a mackerel.

Ben Murphy, Deric Redmond, Joe LaFleur, and Mark Albenisus chartered the “HAPPY ENDING,” a 60-foot Viking, with Captain Francisco and Mates running the boat. They were thrilled anglers when they left the boat as they had caught and released Two 100-pound Striped Marlin at the Cerro Colorado Spot. Their captain and mate’s exceptional skills and experiences made their trip rewarding and fun, and they were thankful for the Happy Ending!

“RIPPER,” a 35-foot Cabo Flybridge, was captained by the skilled Captain Abel, with Mate Jose Luis overseeing the cockpit. Their efforts paid off with an impressive catch of Twenty-one Yellowfin Tuna, brought in using feathers, bait, and lures 45 miles outside of Del Cerro. Once the Tuna started biting, they kept up the action all day, showcasing their strength and stamina and keeping the group engaged.
Luc Morency and Nancy La Flamme, from Montréal, Alberta, Canada, had a specific goal when they traveled to Baja: catching a Marlin. They had heard that Cabo was “The Marlin Capital of the World,” and that’s where they traveled to find one. Their decision was rewarded when they chartered the “ANDREA,” a 28-foot Uniflite, with the outstanding Captain Fernando Noyola and Mate Mario. Their journey toward Chileno was interrupted when they were hooked up to Two Striped Marlin, which they released. Not everyone can be so lucky, Luc and Nancy! Congratulations.
“LA CORONITA,” a 40-foot Cabo Express, with Captain Manuel and Mate Chino, took Augustine Pierce and Rachel Pierce from Mound, Minnesota, to the Cerro del Golden where they caught Sierra and Fourteen Bonito on cuchi. It took perseverance and strength to keep after the Bonito an Five Sierra. “They just kept coming!” the couple commented.
The Kent Family from Byron, New York, were on the “BBII,” a 37-foot Viking Billfish 2018, with Captain Hector at the Helm and Mate Gilberto running the cockpit. Ainsley Kent, Heather Kent, Joshua Kent, and Landon Kent had quite a day, catching Fifteen Sierra and Seventeen Bonito on cuchi at the Migriano, and Nine Roosterfish weighing up to 20 pounds on mackerel at the Los Arcos. The Sierra, known for their agility and speed made the day fun for the Kent family, while the Bonito took quite a bit of strength for them to fight these ocean warriors.
Jake Campbell, Jason Campbell, Scott Spence, and Zack Campbell came to Cabo and chose the “RIPPER,” a 35-foot Cabo Flybridge, with the knowledgeable Captain Abel at the Helm and Mate Jose Luis overseeing the cockpit. Their decision was rewarded with a whopping Twenty-one Yellowfin Tuna caught on feathers, bait, and lures 45 miles outside del Cerro. Once the Tuna began biting, they didn’t let up, and their impressive strength and stamina kept the group busy all day.
Angelo Stock, Chris Stock, Julian Stock, Robert Eskridge, and Ryan Stock from California got to experience the thrill of catching a variety of fish when they went out with excellent Captain Jesus Romero and Mate Jesus Winkler on the “LA BRISA,” a 31-foot Bertram. They caught Nine Sierra and Fourteen Bonito on cuchi at the Migriano, Four Jack Crevalle on a Rapala at the Migriano, and Six 12-pound Roosterfish on mackerel at the Los Arcos.
